I'm a lost soul. Strange orthogenetic gods have deserted me. Either I shall never write again, or I shall not be permitted to write again until March 13, 1918.

Carl Brandt sent for me + has "X" and "Y." He said that to him "X" is striking in details in impressionistic bits, but that he could find no design in it as a whole, that nevertheless so strongly recommended had the book come to him that he could not turn it down because he could not see what even its trend is. He wants a list of the publishers who have rejected "X" and "Y." Will you send me this list? Maybe I'll keep it myself as a monument to what you have

done in this matter. I begin to suspect something. It may be thatthere are reasons why "X" and "Y" must never be published.
