[My note: Wylie, C.C. “Meteor Notes.” Popular Astronomy, 39 (March 1931): 149-154, at 153. Wylie, Charles Clayton. “Did a Meteorite Strike a Crawfordsville Ford?” (Scientific American, March, 1931.) (Wilson, Jodie Steelman; Winfrey, Emily Griffin; and, McDole, Rebecca. Hidden History of Montgomery County, Indiana. 2012.) Wylie, Charles Clayton. “A Proposed Sky Patrol by the Meteoritical Society.” Popular Astronomy, 1948.): 217-220, at 218. “Perhaps the most successful scientific hoax of the last 50 years was the story sent out in 1930 from Crawfordsville, Indiana, of a meteor going thru the hood and radiator of a car. This story was featured with photographs in The Literary Digest, Popular Science Monthly, Pathfinder, Science and Invention, Sunday supplements, and most daily papers. Our investigation showed that the holes had been made by a shotgun. The perpetrators of the hoax confessed, after the investigation, of course.” (Shepard, Joseph Kenneth. “Dodging Meteors.” Indianapolis Star Magazine, January 2, 1955, p. 22. @ Newspapers.com. “Young Swank was driving his Ford Model T roadster south on Ind. 47, about three miles south of Crawfordsville, after closing the station late the night of Oct. 10, 1930. He 'heard a sound like a shot, and I thought somebody was shooting at me, so I turned around and hurried back to town.' At his aunt's home in Crawfordsville, Swank and his cousin were astounded to find a ragged hole through the top of the hood, the fan blades bent and twisted, and another gaping hole through the radiator. It was as if some missile had come from the rear at a downward angle over the top of the car straight through hood and radiator.” The local investigation by Shirl Herr and George E. Carscallen, (a mathematics professor at Wabash College in Crawfordsville), apparently did not explain how any hoaxer could fire a shotgun at a roadster, moving southward along the stretch of Indiana Highway 47, from above the vehicle so as to penetrate its hood, fan and radiator on a descending angle, (and, without risking a serious injury to its driver. (Jodie Steelman Wilson is assistant director of Crawfordsville District Public Library, and Emily Griffin Winfrey and Rebecca McDole were reference librarians, there.)]
